[EN] Dorota was founded in 2009 by three Hungarian musicians, Áron Porteleki, Dániel Makkai and Dávid Somló. With the success of their first untitled adventurous art-rock album, and the second triple(!) album ‘Frik’ the band has become a major player in the experimental music scene of Budapest, and is celebrated as one of the most unique contemporary bands in Hungary.

 

Dorota released their third LP on the 26th of September 2019 titled "Solar The Monk". The album focuses on the metaphor of being a monk. Solar The Monk is a retreat, a reflection, the exploration of new ways and forms of existence in a world rushing to the end. Following the practice of earlier records on free improvisation, Dorota's new album blends raw and powerful punk rock sounds with Sufi, Berber, Mongolian, Buddhist influences. Despite its diversity, the nearly hour-long album 'Solar The Monk' manifests in a coherent listening experience.

After the album release, Solar The Monk got attention by the Hungarian alternative press, and became the best album of the year in international category at Recorder.hu and 444.hu put the song “Solar The Monk I.” the third best song of the 2010s.

 

After giving a couple of high energy performances with the material of Solar The Monk the band started to work on a new record in collaboration with Circassian label Ored Recordings, and released it as a one track EP titled ‘Good’. Connecting seemingly far musical dots to each other is a rather typical method of Dorota, however this short album is their most personal one yet, channeled through often enigmatic lyrics. Spanning from 80’s inspired art funk of the track ‘Good’, through the spoken word/punk-rock ‘Open Heart Close’ to the almost folk-black metal ‘For We Are Many’ the album takes listeners on a journey that never happened. Yet.

[FR] Dorota a été fondé en 2009 par trois musiciens hongrois, Áron Porteleki, Dániel Makkai et Dávid Somló. Avec le succès de leur premier album d'art-rock aventureux sans titre, et le deuxième triple(!) album "Frik", le groupe est devenu un acteur majeur de la scène musicale expérimentale de Budapest, et est célébré comme l'un des groupes contemporains les plus uniques en Hongrie.

Dorota a sorti son troisième album le 26 septembre 2019, intitulé "Solar The Monk". L'album se concentre sur la métaphore d'être un moine. Solar The Monk est une retraite, une réflexion, l'exploration de nouvelles voies et formes d'existence dans un monde se précipitant vers sa fin. Suivant la pratique des enregistrements précédents sur l'improvisation libre, le nouvel album de Dorota mélange des sons de punk rock crus et puissants avec des influences soufies, berbères, mongoles et bouddhistes. Malgré sa diversité, l'album presque d'une heure 'Solar The Monk' se manifeste comme une expérience d'écoute cohérente.

Après la sortie de l'album, Solar The Monk a attiré l'attention de la presse alternative hongroise, et est devenu le meilleur album de l'année dans la catégorie internationale sur Recorder.hu, tandis que 444.hu a classé la chanson "Solar The Monk I." comme la troisième meilleure chanson des années 2010.

Après avoir donné quelques performances énergiques avec le matériel de Solar The Monk, le groupe a commencé à travailler sur un nouvel enregistrement en collaboration avec le label circassien Ored Recordings, et l'a sorti sous forme d'un EP d'une seule piste intitulé "Good". Connecter des points musicaux apparemment éloignés les uns des autres est une méthode plutôt typique de Dorota, cependant, ce court album est leur album le plus personnel à ce jour, canalisé à travers des paroles souvent énigmatiques. Allant du funk d'art inspiré des années 80 de la piste 'Good', à travers le spoken word/punk-rock 'Open Heart Close', jusqu'au quasi folk-black metal 'For We Are Many', l'album emmène les auditeurs dans un voyage qui n'a jamais eu lieu. Encore.
